Interviewing a Wanderlust NZ Guest
Today one of our reception staff had the pleasure of interviewing Max, a 19-year-old from Germany! Max has been staying with us at Wanderlust for 3 weeks now, so we took this opportunity to ask him how Hostel life at Wanderlust is and what he thought about traveling in New Zealand!
Why did you choose Wanderlust NZ?
I had a change of plans which meant I couldn't study straight out of high school. The trip was spontaneous and sort of inspired by a teacher planting the seed of a working traveling holiday in New Zealand! The Visa was super easy to get, even for an unorganised person like myself! I heard Wanderlust help guest find work so here I am.
Are you working in Tauranga?
I have had three jobs in New Zealand so far. I have done inventory, orchard work and in a packhouse. Wanderlust helped me get a job so that was awesome and made my life a lot easier.
What do you enjoy about staying in our Tauranaga hostel?
Meet people from all over the world. Also meeting New Zealanders as there are very few in Germany. I love different languages, learning different cultures and talking to people! I personally know 4 languages, Spanish, Polish, German and English. Everyone is very friendly here, the common spaces like the kitchen are awesome to come home to after a working day, someone will always offer a beer or a seat. I feel very lucky to have landed a Hostel like Wanderlust after hearing of other traveller's experience and it definitely is a place that feels homely. The staff are cool too :)
Do you prefer solo travelling out with someone else?
They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I have found myself a group within the Hostel which makes life easier transportation wise.
What's your favourite place in Tauranga?
I loved Papamoa hills because I enjoy hiking and the rolling hills!
Best tip for new guests?
Be open to everybody, talk and ask for help if you need. Wanderlust is a place you want to stay long term, there are good pubs next door and good places to socialise with other travellers. Mount Maunganui is a must, the beach and the view from the Mount is awesome! Get up early and enjoy the sunrises.
Where are you going in New Zealand next?
The travel bug is real, hearing people's stories is so cool and makes me want to do more of it. I don't know for sure just yet, but I guess that's the beauty of travelling, just go with the flow...
