Plastic Free July

Plastic Free July

During Plastic Free July, we want to remind our guests that running a hostel under sustainable practices is possible. We work hard to preserve our beautiful environment by reducing our environmental footprint.

Since Wanderlust started back in 2021, we made the Tiaki promise, which means to care for our people and place – land, sea, and nature – and a commitment to care for New Zealand and future generations.

One of the critical areas we focus on is reducing our plastic waste. Our dedication to this cause has led us to implement initiatives such as:

Recycling Program

The most important part here is training our staff on recycling to divert waste from landfills. By doing this, the knowledge gets passed on to our guests, and we all battle plastic pollution together.

Environmentally Friendly Supplies

We prioritize purchasing supplies that align with our eco-friendly values. We avoid buying individually wrapped products, buy in bulk, use reusable spray bottles, and always consider reusing or recycling before disposing of anything. One of the initiatives we are most proud of is getting our bedding supplies from Vendella, a brand that recycles plastic to make the filling for pillows and duvets. By buying from them, we helped recycle over 5,000 plastic bottles last year!

Promote Reuse and Recycle Initiatives Among Our Guests

It is now well known that our oceans are polluted by microplastics from bags, straws, takeaway coffee cups, and containers. At reception we ecourage our guests to be a cousious traveller and sell eco-friendly essentials for travelers:

  1. Reusable Coffee Cups: Enjoy your coffee guilt-free with our stylish reusable cups. They're the perfect solution to cutting down on disposable cups and plastic lids.

  2. Water Bottles: Stay hydrated and eco-conscious with our durable stainless steel water bottles. Help protect marine life and oceans by choosing reusable over disposable.

  3. Reusable Bags: Grab one of our reusable shopping bags before heading to the supermarket. They're free and a simple way to reduce single-use plastic bags while carrying your groceries.

Sustainability promise:

We see it as our duty to go beyond sustainability and show full respect to and understanding of the total impact we have on our environment. As conscious consumers and travellers, we are always looking to the impact we are making and the good we can do for our land, sea, and people.

Traveling is in our nature – recycling is in our blood!
